The Order Carries No Words

By Magister Aldwyn Hale

Pathfinders —

Today we removed something, and we want to be plain about what and why, because the why is the most important decision we have made about this game.

Free-text chat is gone. The Hearth’s chat room, the direct messages between companions — the endpoints are deleted, and every message ever sent through them has been erased from our servers. Not archived. Erased.

Why

Outdare is for kids and adults. That sentence has been in our founding document since the first day, and we finally sat with what it demands. A free-text channel between strangers is the last step of a pattern every parent already knows: find a child, learn when they are reachable, talk to them. Moderation catches bad words; it does not catch “what school do you go to”. So instead of filtering the channel, we removed it — and the two steps before it:

  • You cannot browse for players. Finding a companion takes their full code — Name#1234, something they must give you. There is no name search.
  • You cannot see who is online. That feature is gone entirely.
  • You cannot message anyone. Not friends, not strangers. There is nowhere in Outdare to type a sentence at another player, and no way for a modified app to smuggle one — the wire only carries a fixed set of tokens.
  • And Outdare now asks your age, once, at the door. Under thirteen, the road must wait.

What stands in its place

We did not want a quieter game. We wanted a wordless one that still feels alive:

  • Hails — a dozen gestures your own pathfinder performs on your friend’s screen. A cheer for their find. A flex before a race. Playing dead when their streak beats yours. They are coming with the next release, and they are funnier than any chat message we ever saw in the Hearth.
  • The Hearth still burns — it is now the deeds board: your order’s finds and triumphs told in the Order’s voice, with Honors to give. The fire stayed; the typing went.
  • Challenges, gifts, and Honors — race a companion, send a relic from your satchel, honour a deed. Everything you could do together, you still can. Only the words are gone.

For the parents reading

There is no chat for a stranger to reach your child through, no roster to find them in, no online light to watch for, and an age gate at the door. This is by construction, not by policy — the capability does not exist in the product, which is a stronger promise than a rule about how it may be used. The full posture is written up plainly in our safety document, and our terms and privacy policy were updated today to match.

Walk well. The road never needed words.
